Patients with lumbar stenosis often notice that their leg pain improves when they lean forward — the spinal canal opens slightly in that position. The Vertiflex spacer is a small titanium device that holds the spinous processes apart, mechanically maintaining a more open canal in standing and walking. The result is reduced compression on the affected nerves and improved walking tolerance. No bone is removed. No fusion is performed.
Outpatient procedure under sedation.
You lie prone under conscious sedation with local anesthetic. Under fluoroscopic guidance, a small portal is made and the spacer is deployed between the targeted spinous processes — typically L3-4 or L4-5. The arms of the device expand to lock it in place. The whole procedure takes under an hour. Same-day discharge.
For moderate stenosis with classic neurogenic claudication.
Vertiflex is appropriate for patients with imaging-confirmed lumbar stenosis at one or two levels, predominantly neurogenic claudication symptoms (leg pain with walking, relief with bending forward), and failure of conservative care. It is not appropriate for severe central or foraminal stenosis that requires formal decompression, instability, or scoliosis at the planned levels.
Walking tolerance typically improves over weeks.
Light walking is encouraged within twenty-four hours. We restrict heavy lifting and extension for several weeks. Walking distance and standing tolerance typically improve over four to eight weeks. Many patients describe being able to walk distances they had given up on. The device remains in place indefinitely. It can be removed if needed.
