Bracing and orthotics.
Off-load the injured structure. Support the recovery.
Custom and off-the-shelf bracing for spine, knee, ankle, and foot — used strategically to off-load injured tissue and support return to activity.
External support for internal recovery.
A well-chosen brace can off-load an injured structure, restrict harmful motion, and let healing happen. A poorly chosen brace becomes a crutch. We use bracing selectively, with clear goals and clear endpoints. Lumbar orthoses for acute compression fractures or post-procedure protection. Knee unloader braces for medial or lateral compartment osteoarthritis. Ankle stirrups for sprains and instability. Custom foot orthotics for plantar fasciitis and biomechanical contributors to pain higher up the chain.
Fit, measure, follow up.
For off-the-shelf bracing, we measure, fit, and educate at the same visit. For custom orthotics and braces, we either cast or scan the affected area, send for fabrication, and fit at a follow-up visit. We instruct on wear schedule — how many hours per day, in what activities, and for how long the brace is part of the plan.
For acute injury, post-procedure protection, and select chronic conditions.
Common uses include lumbar orthosis for vertebral compression fractures and post-kyphoplasty, knee unloader braces for compartmental knee osteoarthritis, functional knee braces for ligament injuries, ankle bracing for sprains and chronic instability, and custom orthotics for plantar fasciitis and certain knee and hip alignment issues.
Bracing is a phase, not a destination.
Every brace comes with a wean plan. We do not want patients dependent on external support indefinitely. As strength, healing, and biomechanics improve, the brace comes off. Outcomes are measured in function regained, not in time spent in the brace.
